Following are some good advice for you and your children

Place a pea-sized dab of fluoride toothpaste on the head of the toothbrush

  1. Brush your teeth twice every day: in the morning and at night before going to bed. Choose a toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles. The head of the toothbrush should be small enough to reach into parts of your mouth, especially the back of your mouth which can be difficult to reach.
  2. Be mindful that the toothbrush head needs to fit the child’s mouth and the tooth brush handle should fit both the child and the grown-ups hands.
  3. Place a pea-sized dab of fluoride toothpaste on the head of the tooth brush and if you are brushing your children’s teeth, be sure that the toothpaste is child friendly and has a taste that they would enjoy.
  4. Brush your teeth by moving the toothbrush back and forth across your top and bottom and the chewing surface of your teeth, as well as upwards and downwards to reach the back of your teeth, outside and inside. Try to brush your teeth in the same order every day. This helps you remember to cover every area of your mouth.
  5. Hold your toothbrush sideways against your teeth so that the bristles are pointing at a 45 degree angle to your gum line. Move the brush back and forth, using short strokes. The head of the brush should wiggle back and forth while tip of the bristles should stay in the same place. It is important to brush your gums as well since they provide the ideal place for gathering bacteria.
